It was always inevitable that I would feel a need to grow beyond what I do here at Avengers Tower. There is more — much more — to the life of a geek than comics and video games. As time goes on, words like “geek” and “nerd” have rejected their negative connotations, and shedding the status of social pariahs, we have begun to embrace our quirky geek ways — and so has the rest of the world, at least a little bit.

Being a geek isn’t just about hobbies. It’s a lifestyle. That’s why — with the help of Robert Kidman of the Kidman Project, DarkSakura of Orange Lounge Radio, and a few other awesome geeks — I’ve begun to put together a new site called Geek Life. Geek Life is a site that is launching on June 1st that will be dedicated to geek culture and lifestyle. There will be comics and video games, but that’s not all that we’re about. Geeks out there are going to awesome places and doing amazing things — and we want you to know about them so that you can get out there and have a great time, too!

We can’t do it ourselves, though. We want Geek Life to be about community, and that’s why we need you — geeks and aspiring writers and artists alike — to make this project come to life.

Is there a pub around the corner that has the best trivia nights? Is there a little-known museum that science geeks would love in your town? Is there a thriving arcade that geeks in your area need to know about? Is there a vacation spot that you’ve been to that no geek should miss? Have you always wanted to write a how-to about making your own steampunk jewelry? Do you know all the secrets to making the best out of your Renn Faire experience? Is there a book you absolutely adore that no one else seems to have heard of? If so, then we want you to write for us! If you’re an aspiring cartoonist that wants to have your geek-related, editorial-style cartoons published, then we want to see them!

What will make Geek Life successful? You, the reader. This is your chance to shine — to be the one to tell your friends and the whole world about your geek lifestyle experiences, and to learn about and embrace geek culture.

If you’re interested in learning more, please go to http://geek-life.com/about/ (keep in mind that the site doesn’t launch until June 1st, so please excuse the generic template). Please spread the word! Maybe you’re not much of a writer, but you might know someone who is and who would want to participate — and even not, there are thousands of geeks out there who are looking for something new and different, a place where they can read about geek culture and lifestyle, and that’s exactly what Geek Life aims to be: culture for geeks, by geeks.

A new project for a new year.

I’ve created a new and separate blog that I will be maintaining in addition to Avengers Tower. Although it’s of a more personal nature, the new blog is something that everyone who’s interested in is invited to follow along with. The new blog, called “A Brand New Mii” will chronicle my follow-through for my New Year’s resolution of losing weight — and my experiences of doing so by utilizing the Nintendo Wii and the Wii Fit/Balance Board.

I’ve added a permanent link to the blog to my blogroll on the right hand side of this site, or else you can click the link below to find it:

Have a safe and happy New Year, everyone!

To my fellow Jewish geeks, I wish you a long-lived and prosperous Chanukah!

Monday Comic Mania

We’re back for another edition of Monday Comic Mania. There are a lot of comics coming out this week, but only three can make my top picks list! So let’s see them!

  • Green Lantern #44 – After last week’s Blackest Night #1, I can’t help but be excited. I mean, did you see it? It was awesome! This week, Hal and Bart come face to face with an old friend — and the newest Black Lantern — J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter! Dealing with that, plus Sinestro, and having to investigate a bizarre crime in Gotham City is going to keep Hal and Barry pretty busy — and on their toes!
  • Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files: Storm Front, volume 2 #1 – I’m a big fan of the Dresden Files novels. While it was sad that Sci-Fi canceled the TV show based on the novels after one season, I’m pretty happy with the comic adaptation of the first novel so far. The mystery continues in volume 2 as Harry Dresden, Wizard, continues to investigate a rather heinous crime — and now his main suspect is a victim as well! Poor Harry. Will he be able to get out of this alive with the White Council ready to drop the Sword of Damocles on him at any moment?
  • Star Trek: Spock – Reflections #1 – A title that involves two of my favorite things: Star Trek and Spock! Technically, they’re both part of the same thing, but I’ll let that slide. In the vein of Star Trek: Countdown, this new IDW title, a four part series, will give us an in-depth look at Spock and his, well, reflections on why he chose to live on Romulus and the choices that have brought him to his life as it is now. I’m hoping there’s going to be a bit of a Reunification Pt1&2 homage in here; I love the way David Messina draws Picard!

Also coming up this week in the world of comics for AvengersTower.com, a review of the first issue of the new ongoing Doctor Who comic by IDW Publishing! Plus, a review of one of last week’s top picks, Poe #1.

That’s it for now; have a good week, everyone!
