Voyager has had a rocky few years as far as novels go. The very first novel to take place after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, Homecoming, was written like bad fanfiction. The three books that came after that were less than spectacular, only slightly better than Homecoming–but just barely. The Star Trek novelists and publishers seemed to get the hint and shelved Voyager novels, thankfully giving us a reprieve from the horrible writing that had plagued the relaunch of the series from television into novel format.

Of course, as the Trek world moved on, the Voyager crew slowly crept back into view, namely Kathryn Janeway and Seven of Nine. As the events leading up to David Mack’s epic Destiny trilogy unfolded, we as readers and fans were left with questions and loose ends from previous Voyager novels. What was desperately needed was a novel that dealt with the tragedy the Voyager crew faced in the novel Before Dishonor; what was needed was a novel that tied up the loose ends that were created in the horribly written Homecoming book. In Full Circle, there is a novel that does both of these things, and more. Read the rest of this entry

Comic Mania

There’s so much good stuff out this week that it makes it difficult to decide what I’m most excited about! Let’s take a look.

  • Doctor Who: The Time Machination – Stuck in London in 1889 and on the run from the Torchwood Institute, the Doctor will need to rely on the help of an old friend to help fix the TARDIS. After his run on Doctor Who: The Forgotten, I’m sure Tony Lee will be bringing us a thrilling story in this one-shot comic!
  • Wolverine Noir #2 – So the rumors are true: I still read Marvel comics! Surprising, I know. I absolutely adore these noir-series comics that have been coming out lately, and Wolverine Noir is no exception. It’s 1937 and P.I. Jim Logan’s partner Dog has gone missing. Could the dangerous mobster known as Creed be behind it? I hope you’re as excited to find out as I am!
  • Green Arrow/Black Canary #20 - Things haven’t been going so smooth for Ollie and Dinah after recent events (but then again, when are they ever?). As they attempt to work through some of their issues, they find their progress interrupted by a new villain called Discord–a villain created by Black Canary’s actions! This comic only gets better and better every month, and I’m looking forward to see who Discord is and what he/she/they’re all about!

Collections
Here are a few trades that are coming out this week:

Addendum: Now including DarkSakura’s picks for this week!

  • Captain America #50 – Bucky, trapped in the past! And who is trying to kill him? Who isn’t trying to kill him? Should make for a good 50th issue!
  • Uncanny X-Men #510 – A whole issue of action packed fighting? The Sisterhood strikes! Hopefully we’ll find out what they want.

Sadly, that’s about all I’m interested in this week!

Title: Lord of the Rings: Conquest
Company: Electronic Arts, Pandemic Studios
Platform: Windows, Playstation 3, Xbox 360
Rating: T for Teen

In many cases, video games based on movies are automatic fail; they don’t live up to our expectations and we find ourselves disappointed by what we see. We don’t often get our hopes up when playing movie-based video games, and so I was pleasantly surprised when I played Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

Here it is, folks, and I’m outraged! The new Hofner Bass controller being released with the special edition The Beatles: Rock Band bundle:

hofner

It’s right-handed?! Come on, people! You made a replica of Paul McCartney’s most famous instrument and you made it right-handed?! I mean, the thing is damn awesome, but it just doesn’t seem authentic. Yes, I understand that most people are right-handed and Rock Band caters to that, but… come on! Macca is left-handed, and the special edition replica bass guitar based on his guitar should be left-handed!

All ranting aside, it looks pretty damn sweet.

Movie Review: Star Trek

They say that Helen of Troy had the “face that launched a thousand ships.” Well, in this week’s movie release of JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek movie, there was only one ship, but it was the ship that relaunched a dying franchise.

This review may contain minor spoilers. Read the rest of this entry
