Monday Comic Mania

DarkSakura had surgery on her hand today, but that won’t stop us from bringing you our comic picks!

DarkSakura’s Picks
Comic Week! There’s stuff out this week that I am SUPER excited about!

  • Captain America: Reborn #1 – YES. Of course, we all knew this was coming, but I really want to know what the heck Sharon was talking about in Captain America #600. Yeah, the Red Skull is annoying, but he’s a hardcore sort of annoying, so I’m expecting this to be a great title.
  • Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth #1 - First of all, I love the cover so much. Total tribute to Army of Darkness! So Deadpool teams up with his own alternate-universe disembodied head in the Savage Land? How much better could it get?
  • Marvel Divas #1 - It’s all about Firestar! Of course, how much more fabulous can you make it? Monica Rambeau, Black Cat, and Patsy Walker! This is going to be a total Girl’s Night read for me!

There we go! That didn’t hurt, now did it?

Marron’s Picks

  • Batman and Robin #2 – We have a new Batman and a new Robin, but fighting the Circus of Strange isn’t going quite as planned; looks like Batman and Robin don’t make quite as awesome a team as the originals! Still interested in seeing how this new Batman is going to work out.
  • Exiles #4 - The newest team of Exiles finds themselves on an earth where Machine Man, Vision, and Ultron are the rulers of America–and the Tallus isn’t being much help at all. I have a feeling that Forge is going to play a big part in this arc!
  • Doctor Who Classics: Series 2 #8 – More recolored Fifth Doctor adventures by Steve Parkhouse. These classic stories are awesome!

As I’m easily bored, I’ve been conducting a set of polls over Twitter during the past few days to see which Star Trek Captain tops the ranks of my followers. I stuck to the four main captains (Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway) and excluded captains from the books and from Enterprise (Riker, Dax, Archer, etc), because the books aren’t considered cannon and I personally don’t consider Enterprise to be cannon.

Most people just cast their votes, but a few people had some pretty interesting things to say! Let’s take a look, shall we?

Movie Review: The Proposal

It’s summer 2009, and ladies everywhere apparently can’t get enough of Sandra Bullock despite the annoying and trite movies she tends to star in. Don’t worry, gals, after your boy toys went and watched Wolverine: Origins, they’ll be happy to come along to The Proposal to see Ryan Reynolds in action. I mean, did you see that scene where Wade was swinging his swords around and stuff? That was cool. Ryan Reynolds can certainly make a chick flick cool, right? Right?

Ladies and gentleman, thank goodness for Betty White. That’s really all I can say. This movie, about a Canadian-born book editor who blackmails her male assistant into marrying her so she can stay in the U.S., was just barely tolerable. The truly funny moments all included Betty White, and I think if she hadn’t been in the movie, this would have been a real stinker. Sandra Bullock plays her typical “hardass woman who is misunderstood” type, and Ryan Reynolds’ acting consists mostly of staring dumbly and touching Bullock’s ass.

Which brings me to my next point: throughout the entire movie, I couldn’t help but think how derogatory the movie was. If it was role reversal and Ryan Reynolds was blackmailing Sandra Bullock into marrying him, it would have been a grotesque and offensive. However, if a strong, independent woman does the same thing, it’s funny. How is it that things work out that way? But, anyway, I digress.

The plot was typical and predictable of a chick flick. There were no explosions, and lots of “crazy hijinks” that led up to two people who hate each other falling in love over the span of four days. Amazing, isn’t it? Ain’t love grand?

In the end, I suppose the movie could have been worse. Whenever a movie walks the line for me like this, I fill in the actual actors with my two least favorite actors (Hellen Hunt and Keanu Reeves) in my head and imagine how much worse it could have been. That said, while Sandra Bullock walks the precarious line of being as annoying as Hellen Hunt, Ryan Reynolds’ acting was a little better than Keanu Reeves’. That said, I can’t give this movie a glowing approval, but it could have been worse. If you or someone you know likes typical chick flicks, they’ll enjoy it.

As for this geek girl, there weren’t nearly enough explosions or car chases in this movie for my tastes. I give The Proposal a 6.5/10, and 5.5 of those points are for Betty White and Betty White alone.

Monday Comic Mania!

Here we go, here we go again!

DarkSakura’s Picks
Comic week! There’s a few good ones peeking out! And hey, no New Avengers for me! What gives?

  • Dark Avengers / Uncanny X-Men: Utopia #1 – Yes, yes, I was an old school X-Men fan, and I hate the Dark Avengers, so I’m hoping for an epic ass-whoopin’ on the DA by the X-Men. Of course, it likely will take the whole series to get there, but I can wait.
  • Wolverine First Class #16 – DAZZLER. Yes, she is one of my favorite Marvel characters, and having old school roller disco diva Dazzler will be a big treat!
  • X-Force #16 – I love this book. LOVE it. I love how it’s written, and while this story hasn’t particularly grabbed me, it’s still one of those “future of mutantkind” stories that keep giving us plenty of retcons. Let’s see how it ends!

That’s it on my end! I’m down with the mutants this week!

Marron’s Picks
DarkSakura stole Wolverine First Class from me, so I stole New Avengers from her. ;)

  • Astonishing X-Men #30 – Finally! The final installment of Warren Ellis’ first Astonishing X-Men story. I love Simone Bianchi’s art, as it’s very European. Knowing Mr Ellis, this is bound to be good.
  • New Avengers #54 – We have a new Sorcerer Supreme! Why do we need a new Sorcerer Supreme? We don’t, not really, but Marvel likes to screw with us fans. Okay, Bendis. I’ll bite. But this better be a Captain America cop-out, and Stephen Strange better be back to his status of Sorcerer Supreme within two years.
  • Freddy vs Jason vs Ash: Nightmare Warriors #1 – Do I even need to elaborate on this one? You should be able to just look at the title of the comic and know what it’s all about! Very excited for another Freddy/Jason/Ash comic!

Video Game Review: Dead Space

Title: Dead Space
Company: Electronic Arts, Visceral Games
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Microsoft Windows
Rating: M for Mature

It’s the 26th century, and the USG Kellion has been dispatched to answer a distress call from the USG Ishimura. What the crew of the Kellion finds when they arrive isn’t pretty; the mining ship Ishimura is infested with beings called Necromorphs–an alien virus has transformed and reanimated human corpses, turning them into violent and grotesque beings.

I have a pretty bad feeling about this.
