Monday Comic Mania

Once again, it’s time for Monday Comic Mania! A little lost on what to read this week? Check out these top picks from your favorite geek girls!

DarkSakura’s Picks
Time for Comics! Some slim pickings, but still some good ones!

  • New Avengers #55 – Now that a new Sorcerer Supreme has been chosen, what’s going to happen? The Hood is still out there, still hates the Avengers, and has something nasty in mind. Very curious to see what’s going to happen.
  • Dark X-Men: The Beginning #2 – This one gives us more background story for the Dark X-men. More Cloak and Dagger? Yes, please. Of course, learning more back story also means more hints as to how this might end.
  • X-Men Forever #4 – It has Kitty on the cover. What else does it need? Really, will a Claremont-written story be any good? Only one way to find out, and that’s to read it!

That’s it for this week!

Marron’s Picks
It’s only “slim pickin’s” if you only read Marvel Comics, DarkSakura! Someone should tell that girl that other (and quite possibly better) comics do exist outside of the world of Dark Everything. Bendis!!!! *shakes a fist*

  • Star Trek: Mission’s End #5 - It’s finally here! The last installment of Mission’s End, and I’m very excited. The original Enterprise’s five year mission is coming to an end, and this is it’s final mission! Spock, Bones, don’t go! Set your phasers to stun, people, because this is going to be a doozy!
  • Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #3 – The third part of this mini-series that gives us a little bit of information on the Lanterns in Blackest Night. Plus, y’know, if you have all three issues, the covers come together to make one rockin’ image.
  • Wolverine Noir #4 – My favorite of Marvel’s “Noir” stories continues. Will Priate Eye Jim Logan be able to crack the case and find his missing partner Dog? There’s only one way to find out!
  • BONUS! IDW Coming Attractions – For a mere dollar, you can pick up this 32-page book of previews of things to come from IDW Publishing. IDW is currently my favorite non-”Big Two” publishing company for comics (although perhaps Star Trek and Doctor Who make me biased), so I’m excited to see what they’ll be putting out in the near future!

That’s all for now! I know I missed last week’s review of Poe #1, but things were a bit hectic. Stay tuned, however, for a review of last week’s comic pick Star Trek: Spock – Reflections #1!

Movie Review: The Ugly Truth

All right, I know. I am a geek, and I love sci-fi, horror, and movies with at least one car chase and/or explosion — but I’m also a geek girl, and I do like to watch romantic comedies every once in a while. Especially when said romantic comedy has more comedy than romance. Welcome to The Ugly Truth, a funny and cute romantic comedy that’s a bit more brash and a little less sweet than most movies of this genre that we’re used to.

Comic Review: Doctor Who #1

Hot off the heels of the success of Doctor Who: The Forgotten, writer Tony Lee is given the honor and privilege of writing an ongoing Doctor Who comic book series featuring the kids’ favorite Doctor, the 10th Doctor. I had a chance to read the very first issue of the series, hopes held high for a good comic book ongoing series featuring the Doctor. Does the first issue live up to expectations? Can we hope for more great things to come? The answer is…

Monday Comic Mania

We’re back for another edition of Monday Comic Mania. There are a lot of comics coming out this week, but only three can make my top picks list! So let’s see them!

  • Green Lantern #44 – After last week’s Blackest Night #1, I can’t help but be excited. I mean, did you see it? It was awesome! This week, Hal and Bart come face to face with an old friend — and the newest Black Lantern — J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter! Dealing with that, plus Sinestro, and having to investigate a bizarre crime in Gotham City is going to keep Hal and Barry pretty busy — and on their toes!
  • Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files: Storm Front, volume 2 #1 – I’m a big fan of the Dresden Files novels. While it was sad that Sci-Fi canceled the TV show based on the novels after one season, I’m pretty happy with the comic adaptation of the first novel so far. The mystery continues in volume 2 as Harry Dresden, Wizard, continues to investigate a rather heinous crime — and now his main suspect is a victim as well! Poor Harry. Will he be able to get out of this alive with the White Council ready to drop the Sword of Damocles on him at any moment?
  • Star Trek: Spock – Reflections #1 – A title that involves two of my favorite things: Star Trek and Spock! Technically, they’re both part of the same thing, but I’ll let that slide. In the vein of Star Trek: Countdown, this new IDW title, a four part series, will give us an in-depth look at Spock and his, well, reflections on why he chose to live on Romulus and the choices that have brought him to his life as it is now. I’m hoping there’s going to be a bit of a Reunification Pt1&2 homage in here; I love the way David Messina draws Picard!

Also coming up this week in the world of comics for AvengersTower.com, a review of the first issue of the new ongoing Doctor Who comic by IDW Publishing! Plus, a review of one of last week’s top picks, Poe #1.

That’s it for now; have a good week, everyone!

It was inevitable that I would be one of those going to see this movie at the midnight showing, and while I was sad that I couldn’t find my hand-knitted Gryffindor scarf, I was happy to be amongst other fans of the series, dressed up as wizards and witches — and one guy dressed as Dobby! — to watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

There are only spoilers here if you’ve never read the book.
