Monday Comic Mania

It’s that time again! Your two favorite geek girls choose their top comic picks for the week. What’s coming out? What’s on your pull list? Well, here’s what’s on ours!

DarkSakura’s Picks
Another exciting week of comics! What’s in store for us?

  • Cable #18 – I’ve been following this one with the whole “Mutant Messiah” thing, and it’s been an interesting tale. So far, I’m not sure what exactly Hope is going to do on her own? Also, an interesting thing I read is that she’s tied to Jean Grey’s ressurection. Even more curious to see what goes on!
  • Deadpool #15 – So Wade gives up the life of piracy, but what’s he going to do now? Why, go to San Francisco, that’s what! Of course, given what’s happening there, who knows what trouble he’s going to find himself in. Probably the fun kind!
  • House of M: Masters of Evil #2 - The first issue didn’t exactly excite me, but it’s neat that this one will involve Wolverine and his team in Wanda’s screwed-up Mutantverse. Very cool to see characters I liked being involved in this one! May there be much butt-kicking!

And that’s it for me!

Marron’s Picks
A sort of strange week for comics, but a good one nonetheless!

  • Doctor Who Ongoing #3 – The Doctor is on trial by the Shadow Proclamation, and his life hangs in the balance! Ten must prove his innocence, but it might be a little more tricky than one would think; after all, the prosecution is Mister Finch! Plus, a new artist, thank goodness!
  • Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu – As if it wasn’t awesome enough that Shang-Chi — the Master of Kung-Fu — gets his own special one shot black and white comic, he gets to face down none other than Deadpool… in a Kung-Fu motorcycle race! ‘Nuff said!
  • Iron Man: Armor Wars #2 – What does a billionaire industrialist do when someone’s stolen all of his Iron Man armors? Why, he uses a set of Dr. Doom’s old armor to beat up all of those Iron Impostors, of course! I’m really digging the art and the story in this story, and I hope that it only gets better!

That’s it for this week! It should be noted, as well, that I am now writing for the blog Eat.Sleep.Geek as well, so if you’d like to see the full version of my pull list, please head on over and check it out!

Disney, the entertainment mogul founded in October of 1923 by Walt and Roy Disney, has agreed to purchase Marvel Entertainment. According to The Financial Times, the $4 Billion purchase caused Marvel’s stock to jump from $10.35 a share to a whopping $49 upon the announcement.

The purchase will make for an interesting combination, placing over 5,000 Marvel characters such as Captain America and Iron Man next to the likes of Mickey Mouse, Hannah Montana, and Captain Jack Sparrow.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s chief executive — and their largest shareholder. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organisation and infrastructure around the world.”

So, what does this mean for Marvel? The opportunity to have your favorite characters roaming around Disneyland, perhaps? Or perhaps a more prominent home for all of the Marvel-based cartoons on the Disney Channel.

What does it mean for Disney? Quite simply, it means profit; although Spider-Man and Iron Man are currently made by other studios, upcoming movies such as the highly anticipated Avengers movie could be bringing in the big bucks to everybody’s favorite mouse.

The tl;dr Comic Review

Time is something we don’t always have. Sometimes I’m too busy to write full comic reviews, and you’re too busy to read them! But, for the busy comic fan who doesn’t have time to hit his local comic book store on Wednesdays, how does one choose which comics are worth picking up and which should be left behind! In comes The tl;dr Comic Review.

Usually the term “tl;dr” (too long, don’t/didn’t read) means that something is long and drawn out — and you just don’t have the time to check it out. In this case, the week is too long, your time is too important, so I’ve shortened the reviews down to just a sentence or two so you can skip the long reviews on other websites and skip right to the good stuff!

That said, tl;dr version: let’s review some comics!

  • Doctor Who: Cold-Blooded War – This is a perfect example of a great comic being ruined by hideous art. The story is a classic 10th Doctor tale, complete with Donna Noble, but the art is so terrible that I could barely stand to read it. C-
  • Uncanny X-Men First Class #2 – Loved the art, the fast-paced story, and the hints of more to come (like Dark Phoenix, perhaps!). It was also great to see the interaction with the Inhumans, and you’ve got to love how the comic really captures how young the X-Men are at this time. A
  • Gotham City Sirens #3 – Edward Nigma is on the case! I really loved this issue, even though the ladies weren’t a big part of it. Nigma and Batman’s interactions are fantastic and I love how the former-and-reformed-Riddler figures out that this Batman isn’t the same man but says nothing about it. Out loud, anyway. Internal dialog, yay! A
  • Green Lantern #45 – Okay, okay, we get it. The dead are rising! Admittedly, I’m ready for the next part of the story to start soon. The interaction between Carol Ferris and Sinestro is pretty damn good, though! B+
  • Wolverine First Class #18 – Awww. This story was very sweet. Kitty is very well-meaning, and Wolverine is a grump, as always. I loved the story with Multiple Man. Even though the whole “life lesson through All-Ages Marvel comics” can get a little tedious at times, I really enjoyed this story. A
  • Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #3 – What a great end to a fantastic story. If you haven’t checked out Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter before, I suggest picking up all three issues. The story is a really fantastic one, definitely does justice to the Bill of the Bronze Age of comics. A
  • Batman: The Widening Gyre #1 – An interesting story so far. Lots of internal monologue, almost enough to put Deadpool to shame. My only real complaint is that we don’t celebrate Yom Kippur, we  observe it. Other than that, interesting story that mixes some of the old classic Batman with a sort of reflective, maybe even nostalgic “present” Batman (obviously not quite present though as Bruce is still Batman in this story). B+

Monday Comic Mania

It’s that time again! What comics will entice the geek girls this week? What will we be reading, and what are we looking forward to the most? Let’s find out!

DarkSakura’s Picks
More comics! That’s all there is to say!

  • Ms Marvel #44 - I thought it’d take a miracle to get me back into reading this because I do not like Moonstone, but oddly enough, I’ve developed a bit of an appreciation for her since I’ve been pulled back. The cover alone is enough to pique my interest, with her standing triumphant over Carol Danvers. A twist? Or is it provocation to the Carol fans? We’ll see!
  • New Avengers #56 – There’s been a particular point that’s been bothering me since last issue. Some of the New Avengers don’t actually have powers, so why would they be affected by the power disruptor? Ah well, at the end of the last issue, it was hinted that Mockingbird might save the day. What’s she going to do by herself when the others are down?
  • New Mutants #4 – This has been fantastic so far! Now we have a conclusion to a very solid story. Karma and Magik are inside Legion’s mind, surrounded by his various personalities (and not many of them are nice). How will they get out? How will everyone else deal with him? Exciting!

And that’s it for my pics! It’s a very exciting week for comics!

Marron’s Picks
Lots of great stuff coming out this week! Of course, I say that pretty much every week, don’t I? There are a few good things coming out this week, though, I promise!

  • Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter #3 - I had the pleasure of meeting author Kieron Gillen and talking to him a little bit about a month ago at a friend’s birthday party, right before Comic Con, and I have to say — what a great guy. His writing and storytelling are fantastic, and I think his Beta Ray Bill is spot on. It’s great to see someone giving this character some much deserved love.
  • Doctor Who: Cold-Blooded War – One-Shot - The Doctor and Donna might be in for more than they bargain for when they try to help negotiate peace between the Draconians and the Ice Warriors, two very pompous alien races. There’s more than meets the eye, however! Written by Gary Russell, this story looks very promising.
  • Deadpool #14 – Avast, ye land lubbers! Dread Captain Deadpool, Ye Merc With Ye Mouth is here to save the day! As only Deadpool can. After crashing his nuclear submarine, he’s decided to buy a tugboat, fill it to the brim with weapons, and sail the seven seas straight for the resort island Jallarka, where a real pirate has taken over. What do you get when you cross Deadpool with pirates? One word: Awesome. Also featuring Bob, Agent of HYDRA PARROT.

That’s it for this week! Let me know: did you enjoy my mini-reviews last week? Would you like to see more? You can comment here or e-mail me at marron@avengerstower.com. I’ll be putting up something similar for this week’s comics as well, and possibly a full-length review or two, so stay tuned!

The tl;dr Comic Review

I don’t always have time to write full reviews of comics I read, and you don’t always have time to read them. Let’s face it; we’re all busy! So, with special thanks to Christopher of The Homeworld for the idea, I’m happy to bring you The tl;dr Comic Review. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the comics I read this week and what I thought of them.

  • Blackest Night: Superman #1 – Very good. Loved the interaction with Clark and Kal-L, especially in regards to Connor. A-
  • Batgirl #1 - Pretty good, but not a very surprising reveal. Babs has Super PMS in this. Some of the characterization seems really funny in this, but it’s the first issue, so I reckon it’s worth checking out at least the next one to see if they smooth out the kinks. B-
  • Wolverine: Weapon X # 4 – halfway decent, but this whole story is getting old. Wrap it up already! Love the variant cover by Adi Granov. C+ (Version with Adi Granov covor gets a B-)
  • Star Trek: Spock – Reflections #2 – The flashbacks in this issue are even more poignant than last issue. Great story, starting to build up steam. Fantastic art. A+
  • Doctor Who Ongoing #2 – Art continues to be horrible, but the story was cute despite the fact that Charlie Chaplin’s estate wouldn’t let the Who people use his name. Hope this series gets a new artist. B
  • Army of Darkness: Ash Saves Obama #1 – Ash can save anyone, anywhere, any time. This comic amused the hell out of me. Anyone who loves Army of Darkness should check this out. A.
  • Mighty Avengers #28 – Why is Cassie the only one who knows that something’s wrong with Scarlet Witch? Wouldn’t Quicksilver realize that this isn’t his beloved sister? C+

That’s it for now! Let’s hope next week is slightly more awesome than this one!
