Monday Comic Mania

Take two geek girls, a love for comic books, a little bit of awesome, and mix it all together. What does that give you? Another week of Monday Comic Mania!

DarkSakura’s Picks
This week looks promising for comics! Of course, the resident Marvel Fangirl has a few things already picked out.

  • Ms Marvel #45 - Moonstone triumphant? Of course, it’s always when one thinks they’ve one that the opposition gives them a big surprise, so I’m hoping for that formula to apply to this issue. Even so, it’s been a fun ride!
  • New Mutants #5 - The return of Warlock! Didn’t he die? Why yes, he did, as did a bunch of other people in the Marvel Universe, but who’s keeping track? The more important thing is the battle of Co-Leaders and the aftermath of the events in the Utopia issues.
  • X-Force #19 – We saw horrible things going on with X-23 last issue, so hopefully this issue will shed some more light on her situation. The cover itself might be a clue as to what her fate might be. Will X-Force rescue her in time, or will she kill everyone in her way to free herself?

There’s a few more honorable mentions this week, but I’ll leave the word off until after I’ve read them. Overall, it seems like a good week for comics!

Marron’s Picks
Another great week for comics!

  • Batman Widening Gyre #2 – The Bat-filled adventure written by Kevin Smith (yes, that Kevin Smith) continues with the second issue of this six part mini-series. I have to admit that I had some fairly mixed feelings about the first issue, although I liked it overall.
  • Die Hard Year One #1 – Yippee Ki Yay! A prequel to the very first Die Hard movie, this takes place over a decade beforehand, when McClane is just a rookie cop trying to earn his badge.
    3. Green Lantern #46 – Once again, I have to admit that I’m really into Blackest Night a lot more than I thought I would be, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading this next issue and seeing the story continue!
  • Vincent Price Presents: Special Tingler #1 - A direct sequel to the classic Vincent Price movie The Tingler. With a team like Mark Miller and artist Alex Lopez, this is sure to be a terrifying tale of suspense and horror!

That’s it for this week! We’ll see you again next week, same time, same place!

The tl;dr Comic Review

Once again, we come to the time where I read comics and don’t have time to review them fully. Heck, in the last few weeks, I’ve not even had time to do a short run through! So, welcome back the tl;dr comic review: other reviews are too long; don’t read them! Instead, check out these short mini-reviews to see if what I’ve read this week is right for you. This is, of course, not a compete list of things I read this week, but it’ll do, geeks, it’ll do.

  • Star Trek: Spock – Reflections #3 – Another great issue of this story. Two never-before-seen moments in Spock’s life as everyone’s favorite Vulcan finally makes it to Veridian III to pay his respects to his long-lost friend. A+
  • Blackest Night: Superman #2 – The fight is getting heated, and the Psycho Pirate isn’t helping things! Also, go Martha! That woman’s got spunk! Another great issue of this fantastic tie-in. A
  • Superman: Secret Origins #1 – A new take on an old story. Worth reading, but don’t expect anything really unpredictable; this IS the origins of Superman, after all. B+
  • Dark X-Men: The Confession - Scott and Emma come clean about some secrets they’ve been hiding. This was, well, really mushy. Over the top. No dealing with the consequences of anything, either. Overall, it was so-so. Kind of disappointing. C
  • Spider-Woman #1 - Pretty good beginning for a story. Bendis does know how to tell a good story, even if he is fairly evil and ruining the Marvel Universe with all of this Secret Invasion Dark Whateveryoucallits. I’d like it better if the artist didn’t keep drawing Jessica Drew cross-eyed half the time, though. A-

Monday Comic Mania

Both DarkSakura and myself are a little under the weather this week, so we have an abbreviated version of Monday Comic Mania for you today.

DarkSakura’s Picks
A new week of comics bring a new pull list!

  • Dark Reign – The List: X-men #1 – After what happened in the first installment of The List, I’m really looking forward to seeing how Osborn thinks he can take out the X-men, given that they’ve claimed their own island and all.
  • Dark X-Men: The Confession – I caught the preview of this earlier in the week, and I agree, it’s time for the secrets to come out. Emma’s got tons of them, as we all know. It’d be nice to see her come clean!
  • Spider-woman #1 – I’ve been following this story through the Marvel Motion Comic edition. Very happy with it! It reminds me a lot of the same feel Alias did, which is one of my favorite series.

That’s it from me!

Marron’s Picks this week can be found at Eat. Sleep. Geek. Check it out!

Monday Comic Mania

It’s that time again! What do you get when you mix together two geek girls and a love for comics? Well, let’s find out!

DarkSakura’s Picks
Another week of comics, and there’s definitely some goodies on the way! Of course, I’m still dwelling in the Marvel Camp, but I just can’t seem to get into DC.

  • Captain America: Reborn #3 – Doom? The Red Skull? Time Travel? Yeah, maybe the way they’re doing this is on the hokey end, but the part I personally think is neat is that while Steve’s conciousness is taking a joyride through time, we get an insight into some of the events that created the legend around this character. Cool stuff.
  • Dark Reign: The List – Daredevil #1 – Okay, so I’m not the world’s biggest Daredevil fan, but after reading the New Avengers edition of this series, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. How does Osborn think he can get rid of our favorite vision-impaired-radar-sense-whatever man in red? Will he be able to? Even better that this throws BullsHawkeye into the mix.
  • Dark Avengers #9 – One of the things that always bothered me about Ares is that he just ran off to be an “Avenger” and had a kid that he apparently didn’t know was running around with Nick Fury. This little issue gets addressed! And hey, I’d love to see Nick smack down a few of those wanna-bes!
That’s it for me this week! I’m still biding my time until the New Avengers Annual comes out and my favorite comic character gets to kick some butt!

Marron’s Picks
It’s a fantastic week for comics! It was so hard to choose what I’m most looking forward to this week!

  • Ultimate Comics Armor Wars #1 – Rehashing classic Iron Man stories (Armor Wars in particular) seems to be a popular thing at the moment, but I can’t complain; it gives me more opportunities to read about my favorite superhero. And, well, come on! It’s Warren Ellis. This is the man that told Twitter, “They don’t let me write important Marvel comics after the time I said IRON MAN should be about the adventures of a man in an iron lung.” I can’t wait to read about Tony’s adventures of saving his company from inside an iron lung! Just kidding.
  • Ghostbusters: Displaced Aggression #1 - Usually when it comes to stories about time travel, I draw the line. However, in the case of this new Ghostbusters story from Scott Lobdell, I’m willing ot make an exception. Gozer’s father, Kozar’Rai, has defeated the Ghostbusters and scattered them across time. It’s up to Venkman to save the day, but how will he manage to get the job done while stuck in 1886?
  • War Machine #9 – If you look up the word “awesome” in the dictionary (they still make those, despite the internet), you’ll likely see a picture of Grek Pak next to the definition. Morgan Stark has merged himself with Ultimo, and it looks like things are about to get really ugly. Of course, I’m sure Norman Osborn doesn’t mind anything that causes Jim Rhodes any grief. Pretty excited about seeing the next chapter in this fantastic story!

That’s it for now! Don’t forget to check out my full pull list over at Eat.Sleep.Geek! and we’ll see you next week!

I’m sure there have been a lot of reviews of The Beatles: Rock Band already, so I won’t bore you with more of the same by telling you how awesome it is (Scott over at Eat.Sleep.Geek. wrote a fairly to-the-point summary/review) when you already know. However, I will share my experience of The Beatles: Rock Band and some halfway-decent cell phone pics with you since I was up for the midnight release.
